School supplies more expensive than in previous years

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The summer heat may not go away, but your child’s summer is diminishing. Students and teachers will return to class in a few weeks.

Schools in Wichita begin their school year on August 15. As the back-to-school season approaches, teachers, parents and their students are shopping for school supplies, and some have noticed the price increase.

“The price of pens, pencils, things like that, it goes up a bit,” Andrew Bradley said. “I remember when it was like 15 cents, 20 cents like really cheap, but I don’t know what’s happening now.”

Research from the National Retail Federation says you can expect to pay 40% more this year for back-to-school supplies. The average household is expected to spend over $860 for back-to-school.

Lots of people use resources like the Hope Convoy. The organization distributed thousands of supplies on Saturday.

Wichita paraprofessional Yalonda Manning says she knows many teachers and students who source their supplies this way.

“That’s basically where a lot of their help will come from, who I’ve talked to,” Manning said. “Hoping they can get a break, somewhere, to help them start school.”

If you need help buying school supplies, Yalonda says asking for help is okay.

“Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help,” Manning said. “The community is there.”
