Uber driver, Buddy stole $165,000 in luxury items, cocaine, 15 pounds of marijuana: Kearny PD

A Newark Uber driver and his Bronx buddy have been arrested after a four-month investigation that revealed 15 pounds of pot, $165,000 in luxury goods and more, police said.

Javier Ortega, 40, of Newark, NJ, and Severiano Ybert Perez, 42, of Bronx, NY, were arrested on Tuesday, July 12, Kearny Police Chief George King said.

The investigation began with two reported burglaries at a multi-family home on Argyle Place on February 27, police said.

The suspects matched the description of burglars who committed similar thefts on a Kennedy Boulevard in North Bergen on February 22 and then again at a house on Berkeley Street in New Milford on March 2; and a Garfield Avenue, Jersey City address on March 29, according to Kearny police.

Ortega was arrested for burglary and conspiracy by police on Thursday, June 30, and was remanded to the Hudson County Jail pending his first appearance in the Central Judiciary Processing Court in Jersey City, NJ, according to the statement.

Then, with the help of the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, Kearny Police Detectives arrested Severiano Ybert Perez at his Bronx home on the same charges. Perez was remanded to Rikers Island Correctional Facility pending extradition proceedings, the statement said.

Simultaneous search warrants at the men’s homes resulted in the recovery of “jewellery and designer clothing and accessories worth $165,000; 14.9 pounds of marijuana; over 2 kilograms of cocaine and $1,500 in cash,” police said.

Narcotics possession and intent to distribute charges have since been filed against Ortega by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office. A warrant was issued for Alexis Gonzalez, 43 years old, of Bronx, NY, charged with burglary, theft and conspiracy, police said in the statement. The fourth suspect has not yet been identified.

The investigation remains active.
