Harrison Chapter of Alumni Association awards $10,000

CADIZ — A total of $10,000 has been awarded to two Harrison County seniors by the Harrison County chapter of the Ohio State University Alumni Association.

Aiden Sliva, son of Michael and Michele Sliva from Cadiz, received $5,000 from the group.

He graduated from Harrison Central High School in Cádiz and will study pharmacy at university.

Ellee Shepherd, daughter of Kevin and Amanda Shepherd and Dyana and Rod Bleiniger of Uhrichsville, also received $5,000.

She graduated from Indian Valley High School in Gnadenhutten and will be pursuing a degree in health and physical education.

The Harrison County Association scholarships were determined by local alumni Michael Nunner, Jon Kirkland, Lois Puskarich and Gwen Stewart.

“100 women in red” event

Saturday at Mount Carmel

STEUBENVILLE — The EmpowHER Women’s Ministry of Mount Carmel Community Baptist Church, located at 708 N. Fifth St., Steubenville, will hold its annual convention “100 women in red” celebration on Saturday, starting at noon.

The featured speaker for the event, which is open to the public, will be Minister Harriett Coker of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Steubenville.

“We are asking for your help as we work towards our goal of having 100 women in attendance,” noted a spokesperson for the event.

Reverend Benjamin L. Calvert is the senior pastor of the church.

Brooke and Follansbee Libraries announce movie program

The Brooke County Public Library and its Follansbee branch will show films at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays this month.

Presenting at the Wellsburg Library will be “American Underdog”, May 14; “Encanta”, May 21 and “West Side Story,” May 28.

Presenting at the Follansbee Library will be “Sing 2” Saturday; West Side Story,» May 14; American underdog, May 21; and “Encanta” May 28.

Participants are encouraged to bring lunch. Popcorn and bottled water will be provided by the libraries.

Theta Chi Alpha Fraternity plans quarterly auction on May 14

FOLLANSBEE – Theta Chi Alpha Fraternity in Follansbee is holding a quarter auction on May 14.

Doors open at 11 a.m. and the event begins at noon at the Follansbee Community House, behind the Blue Wave Center.

Singspiration in Toronto

will benefit Ukrainian refugees

TORONTO — The First United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Sixth and Main streets in Toronto, will host a singspiration to benefit refugees from Ukraine.

This musical event will take place on May 15 starting at 6 p.m. and will include performances by Friends, Blest, Doc Roe, Tammy Spicer, Make A Joyful Noise and Anaphero. Choirs from the First United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church and St. Francis Catholic Church will also perform. Everyone is welcome to attend, a spokesperson noted. A love offering will be taken for the refugees from Ukraine.
