Teesside shop’s Star Wars exhibit sells for thousands at auction

A PROMOTIONAL Star Wars store display sold for over £13,000 at Vectis Auctions in Stockton this morning (April 28).

Lot 6269 on the was a highly anticipated lot, the Palitoy Star Wars Return of the Jedi vintage Vehicle and Figure Promotional Store Display, was on offer with an estimate of £5,000-£10,000.

These store displays were all handcrafted, painted and supplied by key accounts and Palitoy partners to promote the new movie release and character lines. It depicts the battle scene on Endor, at the end of the new movie Return of The Jedi.

This exhibit was awarded to Romer Parrish, one of Teesside’s best-known toy shops, which opened in 1933 on Linthorpe Road Middlesbrough.

Originally made by NJ Farmers Associates Ltd for Palitoy circa 1982, bought by a collector when the store closed in the mid 1990s, the seller decided to sell after speaking to specialist Nick Dykes.

Nick said: “This is a unique opportunity to acquire something not only of Star Wars history, but also of social history. So many children fondly remember these great toy displays, bringing back so many memories. The local link with the auction house is really the icing on the cake of a great story”.

The anticipation in the room was matched online and with a book full of commission offers.

It opened at £9,000, the commission bid was soon met by a UK-based internet bidder who persevered and won the lot at £13,000 (£15,600 with commission).
