A man’s lifetime collection of hundreds of silver coins was presented at the specialist Charterhouse auction of silver, jewelery and watches in Sherborne on May 5.
Richard Bromell of Charterhouse Auctions said: “This is a fabulous collection of silverware accumulated over many years.
“He generally scratched his money-collecting itch by buying coins at auctions around the country with many lots coming from Charterhouse.”
The owner, who died recently, spent his life working as a policeman.
After retiring, rather than locking up the bad guys, he put the money away.
In the silverware collection, which is generally from the 19th century, there are rare high castle business card holders, dressings, flasks, cutlery, condiments, vesta cases, fancy items, sleeves cane, sewing accessories and many other items.
With estimates ranging from £30 to £500, the collection is expected to sell for £20,000.
Charterhouse is now accepting entries for its busy program of specialist auctions with silverware, jewellery, watches, wine, port and whiskey in May, classic motorbikes in June and classic and vintage cars in July .
