Elgin Community Library Celebrates Love Your Library Month

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – What better way to start your library love month…than by starting with National, bring your child to library day.

Jeanne Cook, a member of the Friends of the Elgin Library, said that since the group started in 2011, she and the other Friends have always wanted to involve the community, regardless of age.

“They need to know what a valuable resource the public library is, no matter what city you live in or what library you use,” Cook said. “Just the realization that it’s here and has great programs, activities and projects for all ages.”

This first event that happened started with the first 10 kids to show up and were given a free door prize.

Children of all ages then had the opportunity to read books, have their little faces painted and make valentines.

The organization also provided free refreshments and a goody bag.

But Cook said they weren’t stopping there…

“The Friends organization got together and decided that we really wanted to do things to spread the word about this,” Cook said. “We wanted it to be a two-way street. We want the public to love and support the library, but we want the friend’s organization to show their love and support for the community.

For starters, they sponsor two blessing boxes, one in Elgin and one in Sterling, both located near the city’s police department.

They are 24/7 donation boxes that help anyone in need with canned goods, dry goods, school supplies, the list goes on.

“Which just means we’ll do our best as members, to donate items and keep those blessing boxes in stock,” Cook said. “Towards the end of the month, we will donate to Fletcher’s pantry.”

To continue their generous donation, they will also be donating 65 books to the Marie Detty New Directions shelter, providing one free book to each kindergarten at Elgin, Fletcher and Sterling schools.

And finally, provide the Elgin Chamber of Commerce with a free meal when they meet next Tuesday.

And to conclude…

“We are having a silent auction, and it will be happening on our Elgin Community Library Facebook page, February 10, during the day,” Cook said. “You can connect to our Facebook page and any of the items there.”

All of the auction items are on display in the library right now, so anyone can come in and have a look physically, or you can watch them on their Facebook page.

The items were all donated by members of the Friends of the Library or people from the community and businesses in the area.
